Teaching Assistantship (1818-2024)

Qualifications

In order to apply for the Applied Communication Studies Skill Center graduate assistantship, a student must have applied for admission to the SIUE Graduate School and the Master's Program in Applied Communication Studies. In order to be considered for such a position, the student must be accepted into the Graduate School and the Graduate Program in Applied Communication Studies.

To hold this assistantship, the ACS Skill Center GA must attend required training prior to and during the Fall semester, register for ACS 560 during their incoming semester, and attend the mandatory GA Orientation for the Graduate School of SIUE.

Current graduate assistants may reapply for an assistantship, although they are not guaranteed a position. Positions are competitive each year. Returning TAs will need to complete the Returning Teaching Assistantship Application Form.

Position Description

The ACS Skill Center Graduate Assistant (GA) will be tasked with overseeing the department's skill center under the direction of its faculty advisor. The GA will hold regular office hours for walk-in appointments, manage the center's online appointment system, and advertise the center's benefits in selected classes. The GA will be tasked with one-on-one mentorship for ACS 101 and ACS 103 students, and for holding make-up speeches for other ACS 101 sections as needed. The ACS Skill Center Graduate Assistant may serve as instructor for an ACS 101 or ACS 103 class as needed. The Skill Center GA will be required to attend all training and orientations required of Teaching Assistants within the department, including enrolling in ACS 560 during their incoming fall semester.

About the Courses:

Public Speaking is designed to teach students how to be more effective public speakers. Topics include researching topics, audience analysis, organizing and outlining ideas, as well as effective delivery techniques for informative and persuasive speaking situations.

Interpersonal Communication Skills is designed to teach students the importance of communication in everyday lives and relationships and to provide them with interpersonal communication skills that may enhance their relationships. This course covers topics such as: self-concept, perception, verbal and nonverbal communication messages, relationship development and deterioration, conflict, and relationships with family, romantic partners, friends, and coworkers among many other topics.

Required Documents

Graduate Teaching Assistant Application Form, two recommendations from appropriate parties submitted with the Graduate Teaching Assistant Recommendation Form, and unofficial transcripts by noon on May 1, 2024. If recommendations/references are from SIUE, applicants and references must also complete the Permission Form for Reference Letters Form.

Returning TAs will need to complete the Returning Teaching Assistantship Application Form by noon on May 1, 2024.
